Young builders unleash creativity at City Makers School HolidayWorkshop in Maroochydore City Centre

MET - City Makers Event

Children’s imaginations will run wild these school holidays as the MET in Maroochydore City Centre becomes a playground for the next generation of builders and placemakers to design their own cities from loose and recycled parts.

The popular City Makers School Holidays Workshop allows kids aged 3-12 years to get hands-on experience with real tools as they construct their urban creations, surrounded by the real-life construction sites of The Corso, 50 First Avenue and the Maroochy Private Hospital.

Guided by expert staff from Wildlings Forest School, the design and construct activities encourage risky play and creative freedom with a focus on sustainability.

Using materials from local tips, construction sites and op shops, kids can build their own dream cities using handsaws, hammers, nails and hand drills, fostering a sense of confidence and a ‘can-do’ attitude to problem solving.

In its fifth year and always a sell-out event, the City Makers School Holidays workshop draws families from across the Sunshine Coast eager to participate in the unique experience.

“Through hands-on experiences, we’re hoping to nurture kid’s creativity and inspire future generations of city builders and innovators,” said Amanda Yeates, CEO of SunCentral which was established to oversee delivery of Maroochydore City Centre.

Parents can enjoy the spectacle while the kids get to work. With an onsite café open for coffee, treats, and a delicious lunch menu to keep the energy levels high, the event promises fun and creativity for the whole family.

For those needing quiet time away from the construction zone, Robyn Cook (The Kitchen Garden Teacher) will be on site in the MET kitchen garden areas with tactile and nature-based play activities centred on gardening plus bamboo building construction as part of the Sunshine Coast Council’s Living Smart Program.
