TOBiAS ‘Behind the Valley’ – New Album Launch

Friday 28 April sees the long-awaited launch of TOBiAS’ third studio album, ‘Behind The Valley’ taking place in The Bunker at The Imperial Hotel Eumundi. TOBiAS will take to the stage with his full band on the night, supported by Sky Eater.

Soulful. Engaging. Enigmatic. Indie/folk singer songwriter TOBiAS has been described as “Beck meets Paul Kelly meets War On Drugs”. After two decades performing, TOBiAS has played alongside Missy Higgins, Jen Cloher, Archie Roach, Fanny Lumsden, Mark Seymour and Shane Howard.

His new album ‘Behind The Valley’ was self-produced and recorded at a beautiful home studio in the hills of the Mary Valley with Andy Tainsh, with mixing by Elliot Heinrich from Pony Records in London.

Behind the Valley Album

“The album is a collection of songs that were shortlisted from a much larger collection of music I wrote over the past few years”, says TOBiAS.

“It’s the first time I’ve really written how I wanted to write and record, with creativity, passion and having so much fun doing it,” he says. “There were beautiful moments in the studio where I knew I was on the right path … usually in the form of a hook or guitar line that felt like it dropped out of the sky!”

“Writing the album, I nurtured the songs, playing them over and over, sought inspiration from all my favourite songwriters and styles, and after two years of writing, I was finally in a place where I was able to find the energy and clarity to put these songs down in a studio”, he says.
TOBiAS continues: “In the past I’ve always been worried about what others think about my music, so I wanted to be as authentic as I could and didn’t really censor my songs and arrangements too much. It’s been pretty liberating for me to watch it all come to life.”

He says playing at The Imperial to launch the album feels so very right.

“I just love playing in Eumundi. I grew up in Eumundi busking at the markets for most of my childhood. The Imperial Hotel was the central meeting point for all locals too back then. Some of my fondest memories are sitting on my Mum’s knee watching local bands slay in the front room of the Imperial – it was an amazing atmosphere. It’s where the seed was planted for me that’s for sure. So yes, it’s like coming home every time I set foot in The Imperial”.

Known for his exceptional breadth, craftsmanship and songwriting ability, TOBiAS comes to life in his live performances with his band. For the Eumundi performance, The TOBiAS Band will see Erin Sulman on drums, Peter Mihailovic on bass, Jon May on keys, Chelsea Skyeater on sax, and Alex Robinson on guest vocals.  Emma Beau will also join TOBiAS on stage for a special duet.
