Sunshine Coast Family Embarks on Journey to Build an Inclusive Home

The Cross Family

A local Sunshine Coast family, Dane and Stacey Cross, along with their three children, are embarking on an inspiring journey to build their dream accessible family home, setting a powerful example for inclusive living and driving change in their community.

Their passion for creating an environment that caters to everyone’s needs is driving their efforts to make a positive impact. Their journey hasn’t been without hurdles. After owning and renovating two homes, Dane and Stacey still struggled to find a residence that could offer the level of accessibility and independence Dane needed, while maintaining the homeliness and functionality for a family of five. Even the
process of finding a rental property while they embarked on their new construction project proved near impossible. They found themselves living in a rental property that didn’t meet Dane’s accessibility needs, making everyday activities like entering and exiting, even showering, a challenge.

Despite these significant obstacles, the Cross family’s determination to create an inclusive living space has only grown stronger. Their story is a testament to their unwavering spirit and a reflection of their commitment to improving the quality of life for individuals with diverse abilities.

After an extensive search for the perfect location, Dane and Stacey settled on the beautiful Sunshine Coast, where they envisioned their dream home. Dane, a leading disability advocate and access consultant, notes, “Our journey has been about turning a dream into reality and leading the way for others. We are committed to fostering an environment where everyone, regardless of their abilities, can thrive.”

The family’s journey has been anything but conventional. Working closely with their building designer, Pete Taylor & the team at Taylor’d Distinction, they have meticulously designed a home that not only meets their family’s unique needs but also sets new standards for accessible living.

Pete states, “Collaborating with the Cross family on this project has been an incredible experience. Their commitment to driving change in the field of accessible housing pushes the boundaries of design and innovation is inspirational.”

Jamie Bauer, the builder behind Jamie Bauer Constructions, shares in their excitement, “We are honoured to be a part of this remarkable journey. Building a home that merges accessibility, functionality, and aesthetics is a challenge we wholeheartedly embrace.”

Stacey Cross, a passionate advocate and driver of change, highlights the importance of their project in the community: “This is about more than just a home. It’s about fostering a sense of belonging, independence, and empowerment for Dane as a partner and parent to our children. We aim to set an example that families where disability is involved is a normal part of life, and it’s a beautiful one.”

The Cross family is known for living an active life, deeply involved in their community and school activities. They are passionate about promoting accessible tourism, currently featured in Tourism & Events Queensland’s current Year of Accessible Tourism campaign, as well as Visit Sunshine Coast’s Accessible Tourism page. Their project is a testament to the power of determination, community, collaboration, and the belief that every individual deserves a home that caters to their unique needs.

To further enhance their project, Dane and Stacey are inviting local suppliers and innovators to collaborate with them on this exceptional journey. In return, they offer opportunities for testimonials, product reviews, and visibility through their Cross Family Adventures social media platforms. Instagram: @cross_family_adventures

“As we embark on this journey, we are excited to work with local suppliers who share our vision for an inclusive world,” says Dane. “We are particularly interested in showcasing innovative accessibility products, assistive technology, and smart home solutions that can transform lives.”

The Cross family’s journey is a beacon of hope, inspiring change within their community and setting an example for inclusive living. By building their accessible dream home, they are not only creating a sanctuary for their family but also driving change and leading the way for a more inclusive world.

It’s important to note that the Cross family’s project represents a personal journey to address the challenges individuals with disabilities, especially those with mobility-related disabilities, face in finding suitable housing. They have stretched their family budget, working hard to achieve their dream, acknowledging that not all are in a position to do so.
