A local family with lived experience of raising a child with a number of disabilities have opened the Sunshine Coast’s first disability specific store to provide convenience for people and families who live with a disability.

Jack and Danie Hockley created Kunda Park based Your Capability Store after experiencing how difficult it was to purchase a range of basic items for their six year old daughter Keira who is profoundly deaf, has two cochlear implants, is nonverbal autistic, global development delay, PICA, vision impaired and has sever texture aversions to food.

“We have two gorgeous sons and our daughter Keira is the light of our life as well we everyone at her special school where she likes to keep everyone entertained with her strong willed, non stop go attitude.

“Many parents with children with disabilities know the daily challenge of juggling therapy sessions, appointments, medication, funding rounds, and so much more. It also becomes very distressing when you add the struggle to find a one-stop-shop to support a child’s basic development and personal needs,” Jack said.

Danie said the purpose of their store is to take away the burden of having to search high and low for quality disability supplies, equipment, and products and have them in one easy to find location.

“We identified a gap in the market when we realised we were wasting a lot of time and money searching for and buying products online that didn’t work for us. Currently a lot of disability products are only available online from overseas suppliers and we want to eliminate the uncertainty that comes with buying these products.

“That’s why we have created a one-stop shop for Sunshine Coast families that allows them to try our disability items, clothing, adaptive cutlery, and incontinence aids before buying to see if it’s the perfect fit for their individual needs.

“We’re aiming to cover a broad range of the market by stocking a wide range of high-quality products that are suited to teens and adults for self-regulation and sensory seekers,” Danie said.

To celebrate the store opening this Saturday 1 October guests can enjoy a free sausage sizzle, face painting and a jumping castle from 10am-1pm.
