From the waves to the walls, how two Sunshine Coast siblings found relief from the wet weather and lockdowns

BOULDER HEADS, a new indoor climbing gym, is adding vibrancy to Baringa/Aura the city of colour.

Jad and Temma Lee, a brother and sister duo, and the offspring of well known surf coach, Dad Brad Lee, have traded surfing for wall climbing, launching a colorful new climbing facility offering the popular get-fit and recreational activity known as Bouldering.

Bouldering – rock climbing without ropes – has taken the world by storm. The sport has appeared in the Tokyo Olympics for the first time.

“It was an exciting Olympics for us, both of our favourite sports premiered for the first time,” says Temma Lee, laughing.

Jad Lee discovered bouldering when he was living in Berlin. An up and coming DJ, there were no waves to chase in Portugal and he needed something to fill the void from surfing and stay active.

“You use upper body strength and core strength, which is similar to surfing,” says Jad Lee. “The part I love though is the problem solving aspect… and social side. Basically you keep fit while having a good time, just like surfing.”

Jad was visiting “home” for the first time since moving to Berlin when Covid-19 emerged and borders closed and lock downs kicked in.

Feeling like his career had been put on hold and a little lost like a lot of us during Covid-19 he tried to go for a climb. He quickly learnt the bouldering scene was lacking on the Sunshine Coast (at the time), and Brisbane was thriving. BOULDER HEADS, a “Covid baby”, was born.

Jad ran the idea for a boulder gym experience with Temma, a user experience magician at Charles Sturt University, and she knew he was on to something.

“All of a sudden he had this idea, and something about it just made me say, I’m in.”says Temma. “I am new to bouldering, but what I have discovered so far is how much fun bouldering can be and how easy it is to learn. Now I’m hooked.”

BOULDER HEADS is open for business and is a great activity for all ages and abilities, from beginners to advanced.

The climbing walls are custom designed, international-level walls and world class route setting by ICP. The climbing routes are changed regularly so the challenge of bouldering is fresh as part
icipants problem-solve their way to the top. For setting updates follow BOULDER HEADS;
