Former AFL premiership star Tom Boyd to share his Mental Health and Resilience tips at special Chamber event

The Maroochydore Chamber of Commerce is gearing up to host over 70 members of the Sunshine Coast business community for a raw and brutally honest after-work event with former AFL premiership player and current Lifeline Ambassador Tom Boyd.

Maroochydore Chamber of Commerce treasurer Lachlan Ballinger said he was excited to have the opportunity to hear from Tom and hoped attendees would walk away with vital nuggets of wisdom from the former AFL premiership star.

“I’ve had the pleasure of hearing Tom speak at a conference in Sydney and I was blown away with his raw  insights into his mental health journey and how he has come out the other side.  Mental health is a significant issue within our community and it doesn’t discriminate across age, gender or profession – Tom seemed to have it all with a high profile football career and a multi-million dollar contract but deep down he was not in a good place.

“Tom will be sharing his lived experience and providing tips and tools to help those around us who might be struggling as well as providing tips to support others.

“Tom’s journey is one of expectations, achievements, struggles and ultimately, resilience. I encourage everyone to come along to learn more about managing mental health personally and within our community,” Lachlan said.

After being drafted at pick number one at the age of 18 by the GWS Giants Tom soon struggled to adjust to the highly competitive AFL environment. He later joined the Western Bulldogs and helped them win the 2016 AFL Premiership, but still felt something wasn’t right within himself. Insomnia forced him to take a leave of absence from the game, and despite trying to manage his symptoms, he eventually chose to walk away from his football career and his lucrative contract and create his own destiny.

The True Meaning of Resilience event will take place on Thursday, March 16th at the rooftop of the new A1 Building on First Avenue in the Maroochydore City Centre, starting at 5:30 pm. Tickets are available at member’s price of just $90.00 per person and includes food and beverages. To book your ticket visit www.maroochy.org
