Business Spotlight with Dementia Support Australia

A Carer wellbeing and respite program for carers and people living with dementia

Dementia Support Australia is delivering a new wellbeing and respite program for people in the community living with dementia and their carers. The Staying at Home program provides an opportunity to pause life for a few days and enter a relaxed environment to learn more about how to support someone living with dementia. Small interactive groups join dementia consultants and subject matter experts to discuss practical issues that build confidence in their caring role. Topics include self-care, navigating community support systems, supporting independence, transition planning, respite options and the clinical changes associated with dementia.

Carers of people living with dementia often have little time to focus on their own health and wellbeing. During the time carers attend sessions our team of engagement consultants work with the person living with dementia to create their own life story and to participate in a range of meaningful activities. For those individuals wanting to learn more about their diagnosis, education is provided informally through conversations. Spending time away from their carers in a supportive environment also offers a gentle introduction to respite care.

Partners, friends, and children of people living with dementia in the community are welcome to attend the program. The program has been funded by the Australian Government and there are no costs to attend.

The Staying at Home program offers an opportunity to socialise with others who may be experiencing the same things. Through shared meals in a relaxed environment, social connections are built that extend beyond the duration of the program. This supportive environment builds the confidence of both the carer and the person living with dementia through increased knowledge, shared experiences, and more importantly an increased sense of optimism.

One of our recent participants living with dementia described his experience of the program beautifully. He states “I got in the car to drive here, and I didn’t know what to expect. It was gloomy and the clouds were grey. I’m leaving here with the sun shining in my eyes and feeling better. You showed me who I used to be”. To find out more watch the video below
